He was able to secure a tenure-track position at Northwest Missouri State in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. We are all very excited about the upcoming move, but it has certainly interrupted our summer in New Mexico. The silver lining is that it has provided some time for Magellan's paw to heal away from the incessant search for chipmunks.

The ultimate decision to leave Texas State came down to the fact that I would not suggest any undergraduate enroll in that University. I could not work for an institution in which I do not believe. I mentioned to Julie that for every good day I spent at Texas State, there were about four days that were borderline miserable. The President of the University is completely incompetent and runs the University like a Wal Mart-- high volume of student with very low interest in quality of life for students or faculty. I am certainly looking forward to a change.

The problems were not limited to the upper administration. The department of Geography is an abusive department with no direction and no scruples. Changes that were promised when I interviewed did not take place in terms of being an abusive department. Older faculty who are not the least bit qualified to assess my research took pleasure in assessing everything I did. The department chair never learned what I did after seven years and still believes that I am an urban planner. This is tragic and shows how little they care about anything but themselves. I am so glad to be gone and will only miss about 4 or 5 out of 30 colleagues.
It was the year of many firsts: the first year that I had tenure, the first year of Julie working and teaching in the department, and the first year that I officially realized that I have no interest in spending my career at Texas State. I have been disenchanted for a while and been carefully seeking other opportunities, but my friends kept encouraging me by saying that things would greatly improve once I became tenured. This did not happen, and in fact, things actually got worse. The dam broke during the March faculty meeting when our department received a visit from the Provost. The Provost is generally in charge of academic affairs on campus. In his purely disingenuous way, he described how the faculty and staff would not be receiving raises for the third out of the past four years. He blamed the legislature. He blamed the numbers of returning veteran students who have large tuition reductions. He did not blame the upper administration for hiring numerous vice presidents who largely contribute very little. After explaining the "grim" financial situation of the university in the midst of America's most robust growth area and economy, he suggested that we donate money back to the University. Texas State has one of the worst student to faculty ratios, is run by people who clearly do not care about students, and treats faculty like dog poo. I will not donate money so that more vice presidents of stapling papers can be hired. Anyway, we look forward to our return to New Mexico this summer, but we are already dreading returning for one more year of drudgery in San Marcos. Please keep our pack in your thoughts and prayers as we identify a new path that most certainly will be far away from Texas State University.
Although we receive lots of feedback about dog stories, volunteering, and the life and times of the human members of the pack, the money really comes rolling in regarding our infamous NFL picks. Due to a lack of television, our picks have not at all been influenced by the Mike and Mike 2-a-days nor any large-scale sports programming. As usual, take these prognostications with a grain of salt, and please, please do not bet your life savings on these picks.
The air temperature never hit above 85 degrees and most days did not even reach 80. This is very far from what we are accustomed to in Central Texas. We spend a lot of time outdoors and our cabin is not even equipped with air conditioning. As he received tenure and a promotion at the end of the spring semester, it was the first summer Dad can remember enjoying since 1998. That time period included 4 long, brutal years in Arizona, 6 long, hot Texas summers under the gun, and one mosquito-laden summer in North Dakota. We look forward to many more summers above the heat. Here is a photo taken this morning of the area above our cabin.

Our cabin is in the midst of the Lincoln National Forest and there was a burn ban because of last month's Little Bear Fire about 50 miles north. Anyway, the forest has become our play area. We generally go on at least one hike per day. So far, my favorite hikes are: Bridal Veil Falls, Zinker Canyon, and the OSHA trail. We are continuing to explore new areas though.
I was invited to the Cloudcroft 4th of July parade to see Saran ride her bike in the festivities. Even though I have only been here about six weeks, lots of people recognized me in town! I loved it when people threw candy in my direction, and I ate two lollipops while the parade took place. I did not like the horses or the really loud drag racing vehicles, but everything else was great. I do miss my friends in Texas and swimming in the river/ pools. But, I will take the nice vacation from the heat without any complaints. Come visit!
Your pal,
Lazarus

It is a cabin built in 1965, and we had to do a lot of minor renovations. We tore up all the flooring, did some exterior painting, and had a new septic system installed. We plan to spend the summers up at our cabin and the school year in San Marcos. We have been here three weeks and so far, Magellan seems to like the surroundings the best. Now, the Lincoln National Forest is "his backyard." Lazarus really likes the cooler temperatures and Moses is honing his excellent skills as a trail guide (pictured). We feel very blessed at the opportunity to live this kind of life. We all need a respite after a long season of teaching and volunteering. Lazarus is the cabin's concierge and invites any of his friends up for a visit.

Because it is about 70 degrees here in San Marcos today, I thought I would make him a cookie sandwich instead of a cake. This is two chocolate chip cookies (without the chocolate chips) surrounding a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We sang to Moses and he quickly gulped the sandwich so he would not have to share his treat with his brothers-- or Jack who is staying with us today. The other dogs got some cookie and some ice cream, but ONLY the birthday boy got the full cookie sandwich. We love you Moses and hope to spend many more wonderful birthdays with our snuggle buddy!

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-85994437789030237722011-11-30T14:37:00.002-06:002011-11-30T14:41:25.149-06:00New item for my stare<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc-ZRmdmk5Yp-dqKIQjuxWg56TktM3z6dbjrwSU7UZ7hVGLeByHpIjV4fD7KefnI7BfQBvTG-BciQYNXhcgisUxD5LBUQHaj1nGbpyOY_ouMtxxs0x6Ymv7Nn7c9edy4xOI138/s320/IMG_2980.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680891704049420466" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-XybvMSbekyV8pTDOIeTOdHMXUgx4uQQ-eeHBx4Tkj-QAW3UiddZMJ_pZLbTJRZTNyP-QqWwBRx9XWm0iXcujyFLc1Z85RXkMVT7okA_xGKCI4RCRk-tecQVNkVSGPCQnEx1c/s320/IMG_2865.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680891704266450386" />

As a good bird dog, I like to stalk things. My usual stalking involves deer, lizards, cats, birds, and possums, but I now have something new to stare at. It is this time of year that Dad brings in an evergreen tree. This has been a long probationary period that included his two years at North Dakota as well as the five years at Texas State. We are very proud of him and this means a significant raise, a promotion to associate professor, and a lot less stress. I am hoping that this means a lot more of Dad being at home, more visits to campus and his office, and I think we should have more ice cream. To show the pack's appreciation of his efforts, we arranged the following photographs...

LAZIE

P.S. My "apprenticeship" is nearing an end, as I am up for promotion this year. Once I have this promotion, I will be tenured and be removed from a long, probationary period. You may be asking, what is involved in this process? How are you assessed? Well, in classic feudal fashion, I am hardly involved in the process at all. I prepare this "box" or "tub" with a bunch of papers, letters, and other crap that is supposed to represent who I am as a teacher and scholar. My professional life, the 32 liter version. I anticipate the process will go well, but it is very cumbersome and unsophisticated. It is so laborious and tedious that I had significant thoughts about a different career path during the past summer months. This process has unfortunately produced collateral damage. The dogs are bored. Julie has been crawling around on pins and needles. My office is a complete mess. I am so tired and strung out! Hopefully, the family life will normalize soon, but I do not hear results of the decision until April! One day, I will look back on this posting and laugh-- and isn't that what a blog is all about?

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-43041403618609363502011-09-27T11:47:00.002-05:002011-09-27T11:55:10.307-05:00We welcome Autumn!!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYsY0vX5ONW248eCzvYqiQJt1XuSNlWxjJ6IjQuDJT0P1_O9gGLq66jhhtXGpTVnTNYcGO5cPaHdHS4TYO8cGMnwRkhRq2S2xkRd5F05Qr5C7BSccZ7-LkSw0rGa0dqC6doOrl/s320/IMG_2928.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657083774776864066" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIrLwAoWTS-4JSPcvmY0jyItFSKJrde5IMBjao-wvgXvRDC_CZw53TBIiczfpb696cnOKFpZa2R2bZWBcM-ihMxX1zN3U4InNQtEr626EHlXjvyB7WQ7Qgcvnb1df93NofQYFt/s320/IMG_2929.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657083770279016690" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGXbr9G08W7dHl5UzmSuFbH_hQGSMRwBR2GPV4Jh9GBuI4yyE8-l8naHPkFNzMcYmmYZL2FdRucoWmVRTytUAmzY6ZvojPBQPiXlYKrcYuLACQ-rDA1hL5iTmJbZcFhsXptgVw/s320/IMG_2932.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657083761912457458" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrhYPqu0YPo0Vgk-Hw4TV2psvhbgg9iMCQ1XLsO2u9uDd8XcHBzgeESLqbgJBGDBxQBVy7Mb-4K4BD_jfJTTntZuMClrMBJeZ4FLFzkYbXaaeQfSoE890WVXAskoZvTe0Idggc/s320/IMG_2925.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657083777153439202" />

Well, this was the most miserable summer we have had as a whole pack. We're expecting our 89th day of 100 degree temperatures today! Mom and Dad blabber on about this not being as hot as some place called "Feenicks" but we really do not care! To celebrate the fall, we took a nice, long hike over last weekend in the Purgatory Creek greenspace. It was still a bit hot, but we got out early enough that the temperatures were still under 75 for the two hours we walked. The photos show our adventure! Anyway, I look forward to the fall and winter so I can snuggle with my parents and all my other friends.
Hey, it's Moses here. I am the dog who occasionally likes sunning myself and being a little on the warm side. This summer, I have changed my mind. It has been so hot that I have been dealing with digestion issues and general heat stress. Us dogs have been spending a lot of time inside. This week, we will break the record for the hottest summer recorded in Austin and there is still no relief in sight. I am so glad we got to go to Michigan in June to escape for a little while. Anyway, I better get back to laying under the A/C vent.

We had a tremendous time and highly recommend this trip and the American Adventure Tours who provided the gear and guide. For you experienced paddlers, the runs were anywhere from Class 1 to Class 3 the day we went. The water temperature was about 51 degrees! It was so nice to spend a few days out of Texas during this epically brutal summer. Julie and I are the first two on the left or port side of the raft.

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-72646166865941534052011-07-12T14:31:00.002-05:002011-07-12T14:34:55.236-05:00ARF Success!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFq9zZDAYlkdoHFDUnB8HenbDYSeOYHop2LX3SVC6PpD910Igm7AzYoC55m9IICWF8Aqogf8FQSkjyTTlrgbDypA7Dlgy-Lvi_OQgqHqYTp5m3mp2Ucox85a8y2YTK6KP_t1At/s200/DSC07749.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628551439216033186" />
The Animal Reading Friends (ARF) program began in September 2010 at Travis Elementary School in San Marcos, Texas. This school-year long program attempted to improve the reading skills of seven second and third graders who were reading below grade level when they began in the ARF program. Each student would read to a pet partner team for 20 minute intervals on Fridays. The idea behind reading to the pet partner team had to do with 1) practicing reading aloud, 2) gaining confidence in reading and 3) instilling a feeling of enjoyment in reading. Quantitative measures highlight the success of this program. On average, our second graders improved 3.75 reading levels meaning that most of the participants are now reading above grade level. Even greater success was shown by the third graders. On average, these students improved 4.66 reading grade levels and each third grader began reading below grade level and ended the program reading above grade level. In addition, all ARF student participants improved their correct words per minute ability as well as reading accuracy. While these numeric measures certainly underscore the success of the program, intangible benefits such as improved attendance, gaining comfort interacting with animals, and having a positive mentor involved in their lives clearly show value in programs such as ARF. Please join us and become a positive agent for change in the lives of a local student!Kevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-35330223244443236222011-07-06T10:46:00.003-05:002011-07-06T10:52:54.934-05:002011 Michigan Road Trip<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTuOJof9sZ4qCq4BuKfjeGJPxPV5kKU3fiDB8_hnVnv-xhXPRGDlttX4XukrD14ypCyJKXKyWfmbV8KMa3xpT0eVmKRphPJkwUHopA1Lze9k9ORSuRTNSgoxwOTERIzP9mcPSv/s320/P6260154.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626267800626955826" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrn2R_rpyUB4AZJqfvC2s8s545PNLqkCD-l9SBZl8gafgHHdQgR5pwNmifHF1pOpSRAIGewYKLZ2kt4psGtCxKGMRRlkIPh8DdGE4H1kWlwlCrEFpDg3oiDGOD8m1FWj37F6qE/s320/IMG_20110629_121358.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626267794930513762" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-xfvF63iYg9esQW2d-i-g2eSlC01ol52CFXNWBjyaRhzMhaMkozAFFsvzfNrf2OBAhIYFYBcWUX4723I77Vk08mD2tijqz6jdeh6LhphiJx9DGGP5GKgJiK6rHCMOqaPwZqWo/s320/IMG_2797.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626267788878864466" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji7zbWVxzh34o-1rAwixHZH_Na7Oes96t5h1KTZjiBJb2VY__OmDbMEsJORDp0YDNSy2n8Kh8p0q7ztWaIhjtQD_ZmQ6zv_KhslAyVAb8bHXoCoh5gQSAkKJDH4JZa8IeO2max/s320/IMG_2760.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626267782273637282" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1WOr15VPgefW93Ab4-se1PNs3uRjFy2Ge7oqno6TqOBjI7CinhpCf-kfxw_7JFFso16DV0-RHt13-Mfg08OHKhCGxYDCYTRPfR_9v9jIBTheHWNE3_Kmh5VfsFf7WqQjSYkng/s320/IMG_2770.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626267819904926818" />

This summer, the Romig Pack decided to rent a cabin on a lake in Michigan for their vacation. The drive was long, but we got to do some fun things along the way. Two fun things we did were visit Vandalia, Illinois where Abe Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature. Lazarus Lincoln Romig and Dad took their picture with a sculpture of a young Lincoln. On the way home, we stopped in Cairo, Illinois where the three explored the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers off-leash. Magellan had a great time there. In Michigan we used the opportunity to recreate in Lake Allegan and Lake Michigan. Magellan and Dad are in Lake Michigan and Lazarus and Mom are in Lake Allegan. The whole trip was pretty relaxing though like a vacation is supposed to be-- see Magellan and Moses napping on Mom in the cabin. We had a great time and hope to go back again!

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-62193755731844669122011-06-14T11:58:00.003-05:002011-06-14T12:10:15.947-05:00Memphis Trip, 2011<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYBXuEf5MOXpZLRqDO4uY69YC3HpAAgeb3OT2-zCDoVgWSKckAkELGjBUDKy71PxrSkE4ie2zA5g0AXLlZTE5Jou-lqViASi02Q21HM7Gm_JZGtM77aCbOVa5dmfxSYxZTwiia/s320/IMG_2697.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618123277862029922" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibr1b6qTojSQDagXcn0l4vuds0_UjJjFRrUt0nHAUcMxuVrzXsMHv0CcZ98s3i2FjqnHCCPp3CtlVP0u69Jcg0-G4lG6Z8FhyphenhyphenmO7cRR52VXfxOk7Bn2XE363wWCwtqc_58su1f/s320/IMG_2723.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618123270440424418" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg56MGxH8GG2k3zxZa_1fO_9dxgj5a-pX1mcXYoDsBiGpYDsdEVe5gHSwGPK8CS3-vfJqclmFQEmWuvP4zllUaUcla2CyOcrSMuxJkFaMjfKQuC8W8kw82LgHsh4VYm-V5yXwLt/s320/IMG_2738.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618123287120798290" />

We decided to take a trip to Memphis and meet up with Kevin's mother there. She had never been to Memphis and it was a chance to visit a city with which we all have an affinity. Our biggest outing was to Graceland. This time, we took a tour of Elvis' planes and some of his automobiles. We also visited the Rock and Soul Museum, the Cotton Exchange Museum, the Civil Rights Museum, and Sun Studios. Along with all that, we had time to drop in for a set at B.B. King's Club on Beale Street and heard a 90 year old blues man play his guitar. In Memphis, another great pastime is eating. We ate at two of Elvis Presley's faves being the Arcade and Coletta's. We also hit up Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ, Gus' Famous Fried Chicken, Rendezvous, Corky's, and Uncle Lou's. It was very hot while we were there, but we had a great time. Magellan really enjoyed the ribs from Corky's that we brought home on the plane.

Kevin

Photos: Kevin's Mom in the Lisa Marie, Presley's jumbo jet.
The entertainment room in Graceland with 3 tv's because Elvis wanted to be like President Johnson.
Blues group at BB Kings in Memphis.Kevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-71190658760943176772011-05-24T10:19:00.002-05:002011-05-24T10:32:40.981-05:00Trip to New York City<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 292px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY1i9iF9hQhrgP_p44oj-E5Jn1wmZm8m5V9JF9A0PmnJ_PF4xGjQfWztXqNGZdOk5MJObces-gS_sQWjOqZlhf2U0IrXb9T05lqtWUs-xOV5zW-VyIWzGAb_Qop1o5UypxyZE-/s320/P5190016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610305931987075890" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgih5yU0dDRtxfjpvWB8eLTP3m1LE_GpH819E-YlhTaL_autVpzt9sw_8B2LehAqBbz0sRX5D2YncTnlucOyI10odxQTpqrh4vEhCYaXMt2etn39WA6KZe2LN_pPlcflsUyOMV7/s320/P5180009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610305927837152050" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipZRjv0g7cs-7cx_iuYMy9k68YfBgcCyyjqMqndye1Ot9TcAGNcZQ3gbm46P4iodCdpgtcsiD9WB86hhIU5mU_fI3DU6OCGO-JufZuKrvSrwqk5158r89h8j9QBLrYvFCupCD3/s320/P5200044.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610305939404251458" />

To celebrate our upcoming 10th Wedding Anniversary, Julie and I took a trip to New York last week. Our first evening in the city, we got half priced tickets to see the Broadway Show, Memphis. It was a nice show and very different from most typical Broadway musicals. On that day, we also took in the sights and sounds of Times Square. The next day, we decided to try to get tickets for the Late Show with David Letterman. I wanted to go because Kelly Ripa was a scheduled guest, and Julie wanted to go because she had never been in the live studio audience for a tv show before. While we waited to see if we would get tickets, we traveled to the Macy's store in Herald Square. It was overwhelming for us, but while at Macy's, we learned that we got tickets to the Late Show. On our way to the show, we popped into Lindy's on Sixth Ave to have a bite of cheesecake. This restaurant is where Chuck Berry treated Buddy Holly to cheesecake back in the 1950s. We saw the taping of the show and had a good time. The next day, we took the ferry out to Liberty Island. As you can see in the photo, it was raining, but it was well worth it. In the afternoon, Julie got her hair cut and styled at Arrojo Studio by Nick Arrojo in SoHo. We later went by Chinatown and had really good cheeseteaks for dinner in Murray Hill. Our final day began by renting bicycles and touring through Central Park, The Upper East and West Side, Harlem, and Morningside Heights. We found Grant's Tomb and used a lot of the really nice bike lanes in New York. That afternoon, we attended a street fair in Greenwich Village. Later we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and ate Gramaldi's Pizza under the Brooklyn Bridge as the sun set across Manhattan. It was a busy but very enjoyable trip.

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-24785807502931036092011-04-30T17:44:00.002-05:002011-04-30T17:55:00.944-05:00Look what I found<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ie9HrqAdaa5kJ7FiAWLEMRstzQU9wv2ZAl9arzvAkd_pqOOTU2QoRskIZ6eAkbqa003Tt7_QfCk7A94cGywVFHizB4fM5OGa15JdTFB-bhyphenhyphen7VQ6wtegd0Pg8UFgcSe9xQST6/s320/IMG_2553.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601513882674760850" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf2G7E3n5x9RpXL53s7xP2WcvPRoPb5G1Spttq7FzYwZSbqoKqxxaNek4eCV8zQg9c3DuQLxPW-5Yh1CV5An-Q0o25lzUBX29v2VhjhiYyODJL5KVnR4hH67mFPK486ef1VBHs/s320/IMG_2552.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601513879068529698" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpDml7ONP9-EPNBqx4nz1oimWybhNI9vL88xSEa9ZZJsyPkjhtg8kbJPc9-EhH_vpPUck0FUQGymHYp7NEys5-l3sve-3l0ewENuPJS3D9V_eQCB6d3MYczXJrIWY75f8hYhrV/s320/IMG_2551.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601513871726153394" />

It's spring in Texas which means changeable weather and lots of wind. Last night, we had strong winds that likely knocked this "friend" out of a nest and onto my territory in the back yard. Mom and Dad were ready for bed and I brought in this bird alive to the bedroom! What a great bird dog, right? Well, when I softened my mouth grip and showed my new "friend" to my Mom, the bird took the opportunity to scoot under their bed. For some reason, Mom left the room with Laz. Moses, Dad, and I needed to do something. Dad lifted up the bed and I grasped the bird in my mouth and took it to our bed in the family room to show Mom and Lazarus. We were playing together and having fun until the bird just stopped moving. I tried to nudge it, but it had fallen asleep. Dad took my photo with the bird, and then he traded me some jerky for the bird. He went outside with it and I didn't see it again. Anyway, it was a fun night.

Keep exploring,

MagellanKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-10123165744087965112011-04-19T15:57:00.003-05:002011-04-19T16:03:50.035-05:00Kevin's Trip to Seattle<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPzRKFt_tAvZBZbVL2TXLFKPJGteMOrSjcEyoqbohJg9ltPOf0oVA4OAJRVPKNH1oaGCZi3Wd3-ns9Q5FgAx_5h-FrtP8IaHqThvZSeoP7uFSif797gRWLUxG5kqktjQohlhwg/s320/Farmers+Market.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597403262777216210" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpJ8s1qyrjm9xTxO0tQCisyFJWC1vhRCxe9aJjp79MZMq4B-o5LCdAJdfwqesUx537cA-kGXySdbZNpb5pXaeeFJZ_ziWfVn9oSOOAR6Lk6JZh6AZi2zym5qYpKT_0ytZJyJJ/s320/Ferry+Approach.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597403256071500930" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAZ6hZzBrmBSMhLGSaWFZmOAvVz7Ne3lQDGjLkkno1vqmu8zmDIBE3O9mfYW6sRnzci3faDssKkSQdBdUCzVXfbMKxrtZIRaBbn7-azkfN8gHq_U98aN1qqbq3Yiy8VIubz9Ie/s320/Best+Skyline.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597403268761195826" />

Kevin traveled to Seattle, Washington last week to attend the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers. I presented a paper on his current research regarding the grass-fed beef industry in the Beef Belt of the United States. It was nice to catch up with some friends from Arizona State and North Dakota. The weather was gloomy and cold, but it did not matter too much because summer in Texas will be plenty warm enough. Here are a couple of photos from my ferry trip to Bainbridge Island which is across Puget Sound from Seattle. You can see the Seattle Skyline, the ferry arriving on Bainbridge, and the farmer's market where he scored some liver jerky for his three adoring furry friends.

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-62418709962094776752011-04-11T12:32:00.003-05:002011-04-11T12:40:57.325-05:00Trip to Mississippi State<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy_SDy82Y99IIDvPasbi6xKHtTKhHZpUknefFY603tQpEQijpCatt1tI79WKASF02vR7_maZFIWaZ3rskXGxdET3A8kLsL9qWR3MUGpo2i8v_v8DTSooTXJfLZVw8cm0B0gOtE/s320/IMG_2496.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594382037419999762" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRN3mbYJ57SUmISyk3pMC9vJwcaIrOoKjvZLcJ6nPcnoGvzTdHIb9Lc65qmWNSsI0wvAv8ZJmnlV6nsahyRG4kE4xMbWRW00v4SwUN9BPI5EMucQ9Nukrtwtv9hZTWvj6ogb-D/s320/Waverly+Plantation.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594382030062665794" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifaE3zN-0wGnCVprt59fHvZYq65aFWpY8x93e011ZdPfw7dVCJRMT9yGKm0FO136w_hBelNaIoXRUhKWSZ8gCgD0q5CEzPWsXIPPNpG2aji6B046XxFWAkkr0RKW2UjgXGAHlp/s320/P4070021.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594382041705049362" />

Julie and I were fortunate to take a trip to Starkville, MS at the end of last week. Our primary purpose was to see a photo of Magellan on campus. We traveled as guests of Hunter Henry who is an alumnus and on the Foundation Board. Magellan's photo is in a case that discusses Mr. Henry's life story in the Alumni Center. Secondarily, I gave a talk in the Geosciences Department about grass-fed beef. Kevin has a colleague in that department that he met while a PhD student at Arizona State. In addition, we also visited the Waverly Plantation which dates back to 1852 along the banks of the Tombigbee River in Mississippi. Julie also got to go into a Piggly Wiggly grocery store for the first time. We brought an individual peach pie home for Laz, some crawtator chips for Moses, and some butter cookies for Gelli from Piggly Wiggly.

KevinKevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32462141.post-81564921551507748462011-03-30T16:33:00.002-05:002011-03-30T16:40:33.598-05:00Continuing with pet therapy<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-7Mj8qtPIfkn7q-wG5t_XFXvPlpZ4pr5X-XWyitfp1nhvSwUHQJ5gn9Mvf6nutAfzAlfMNnBdJuC3iBymWtymiJYYVvzFnPjOlcpgT7ZhbPNtbFBL0byoAhq9W1Lw02mxodqO/s320/PA030070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589991072380661154" />

Moses, Lazarus, and Magellan have been continuing their work as pet partners. Magellan and Moses go to Travis Elementary School every Friday to help with a reading program. Each of their reading friends have improved their reading abilities this year while practicing with the dogs. Lazarus has been going to the school on Thursdays to work with children in the special education program. The students are mostly dealing with some form of autism and like the routine of having a visit from Laz. The three have also visited the local domestic abuse shelter for a special program. Lazarus continues his work on alternate Fridays with the elderly at the Texan Nursing Home. He loves the attention and seeing his friends who are residents as well as staff and visiting family members. The volunteer work keeps us busy, but it is a good kind of busy because -- A tired puppy is a good puppy.Kevin, Julie, Laz, Moses, and Magellanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06415104882307466712noreply@blogger.com0
